2011- 2012 School Year Community Scholarship & Volunteer Program
This fund exists to help families in need with the costs of tuition at HSCLC.
To Receive Funds: There is a set of Center related tasks with an associated dollar amount. For example: Clean the floors one night per week: $25 credit. Parents can perform tasks and receive the credit on their tuition statement, lowering the amount of their bill.
These Funds are provided by: Businesses, individuals, churches, (anyone, really) who pledge or designate money that will go directly to this program. Also, any monies made over the amount in our fund-raising plan for the year is also put into this fund. *This amount varies throughout the year.
Current school year Scholarship Fund Pledges (businesses and individuals): $125.00 per month *As of July 21, 2011
Simply set up a meeting to discuss the current options: (828) 622-9575.

Designate a Family in need
We have the following actual situations at HSCLC this school year: *Covers our Preschool, Transitional Kindergarten, and After School programs
Family #1 Single mother of three going to school, working part-time (Tuition, after scholarhsip is $340 per month)
Family #2 Two parents working, extremely low income, 2 students enrolled (tuition after scholarship is $250 per month)
Family #3 One working parent, one parent going to school, with a student enrolled with special needs (tuition after scholarship is $300 per month)
Family #4 Working Grandparents, legal guardians raising three children with special needs (tuition, after scholarship is $340 per month)
These families would otherwise qualify for DSS or Smart Start Funding, but with the waiting list at a stand still, these funds are no longer available to them. Instead they receive our Community Scholarship tuition credit which means they are performing volunteer tasks and are a large part of the fund-raising efforts at the school. The amount shown above is what remains for the family to pay which is still quite a struggle as you may imagine. Any additional help would be greatly appreciated. Simply let us know which family you wish to alleviate and we will apply it directly to their next tuition bill.
Send checks to:

Volunteer!
Scholarship recipients are required to sign up and perform various duties at the Learning Center in exchange for their tuition credit. Some parents are unable to commit enough time to match the need with work and school schedules as they are. This is where community members can step up and fill in when a parent needs a substitute.
The qualifying family recipient will receive the tuition credit for the task performed by the volunteer.
To help in this way, simply stop by and fill out an application at the HSCLC Office, and/or call or email for more information 622-9575.

HSCLC Responds to State Funding Cuts
Due to budget
cuts and an unforeseeable future for funding of early childhood programs
throughout the state, the Hot Springs Community Learning Center has been
preparing for a means of alternative funding. Looking internally, their
Community Scholarship Program has recently undergone a change from its original
draft last fall. In August 2009, HSCLC launched a pledge drive asking
community members, businesses, and extended family to donate to the Community
Scholarship Program, a fund that would be help assist families with the cost of
tuition. Qualifying applicants simply received a specific
scholarship credit each month based on their financial need. Over $12,000
was pledged, collected, and distributed to families throughout the 2009 - 2010
school year. Although the pledge drive begins again June 1st - August for
the 2010 - 2011 school year, the distribution will now involve a commitment of
volunteer tasks in exchange for the tuition credit.
This new
system will allow the participating families to be a valuable part of the
learning center community. Also they will decide when and how much time
and energy they would like to contribute in exchange for their tuition credit.
Each participant will have a vested interest in the development and maintenance
of the program adding significant value all around.
Currently,
there are 25 different volunteer tasks that should accommodate even the busiest
of families. For example a parent, (grandparent, or friend) can sign up
for a once a month committee meeting, once a week yard mowing, or a once a day
lunch server. This comprehensive list is located on the web site: www.hsclc.org, under
Enrollment Information, Financial Aid. Additionally, community members
that provide the weekly Community Visitors slots or any other volunteer task
can designate their credits either to the general scholarship fund or to a
specific participant.
This program
is open to any and all enrolled families at HSCLC that apply and can demonstrate
a financial need. But anyone can participate by volunteering time or
money. To donate time and services simply call the center for an
application. To donate a tax deductible donation to the Community
Scholarship Fund please mail a check for any amount to: HSCLC PO
Box 94 Hot Springs, NC 28743. Please designate that you would
like it to go into the Community Scholarship Fund.
If you should
have any questions regarding this program, please call the HSCLC office and
speak with Project Coordinator, Deborah DeLisle at 622-9575.
