We just received our FOUR Star Rating!!  Yahooooo>>>>>>

May 31, 2010

Due to budget cuts and an unforeseeable future of funding for early childhood programs, the Hot Springs Community Learning Center has been preparing for a means of internal funding.  Their Community Scholarship Program has recently undergone a change from its original draft last fall.  In August 2009, HSCLC launched a pledge drive asking community members, businesses, and extended family to donate to the Community Scholarship Program, a fund that would be help assist families with the cost of tuition.   Qualifying applicants simply received a specific scholarship credit each month based on their financial need.  Over $12,000 was pledged, collected, and distributed to families throughout the 2009 - 2010 school year.  Although the pledge drive begins again June 1st for the 2010 - 2011 school year, the distribution will now involve a commitment of volunteer tasks in exchange for the tuition credit.

This new system will allow the participating families to not only determine how much they would like to receive in tuition credit; it will also continue to build the Learning Centers community.  Each participant will have a vested interest in the development and maintenance of the program adding significant value all around.

Currently, there are 25 different volunteer tasks that should accommodate even the busiest of families.  For example a parent, (grandparent, or friend) can sign up for a once a month committee meeting, once a week yard mowing, or a once a day lunch server.  This comprehensive list is located on the web site: www.hsclc.org, under Enrollment Information, Financial Aid.  Additionally, community members that provide the weekly Community Visitors slots or any other volunteer task can designate their credits either to the general scholarship fund or to a specific participant.

This program is open to any and all enrolled families at HSCLC that apply and can demonstrate a financial need.  But anyone can participate by volunteering time or money.  To donate time and services simply call the center for an application.  To donate a tax deductible donation to the Community Scholarship Fund please mail a check for any amount to:  HSCLC  PO Box 94  Hot Springs, NC  28743.  Please designate that you would like it to go into the Community Scholarship Fund.

If you should have any questions regarding this program, please call the HSCLC office and speak with Project Coordinator, Deborah DeLisle at 622-9575.

GREAT News for the HSCLC!

From 2008  Beginning days of the project .....

August 11th
Pete and Mary Dixon of Hot Springs donated the sand for our re-claimed sandbox!  And for those who have ever purchased sand before, you KNOW what a genourous donation this is!!   THANK YOU on behalf of the children who will greatly enjoy the digging and building with sand.  Our kids are so lucky!

August 4th
Our initial staff has been offered postions at the new HSCLC, and all have accepted!  Ms. Caroline Pitts will be the Lead Teacher for the 3 & 4 year olds.  Marion Cook will assist her three days per week and Brooke will assist the other two days.  Deborah DeLisle will Lead Teach the Home School Supplement program with 5 & 6 year olds.  And Margaret Denson will head up the After School Program and serve as the center Business Adminstrator.   Today we begin our training together!

July 14th
Erin and Chris Chapman of St. Louis, MO donated $100 to the HSCLC !!!! Who are these awesome folks from way far away that keep sending us their kind wishes and gifts? And why do they support us? Many are our own friends and family that have visited Hot Springs, enjoyed it's beauty, and experienced it's children. They see something here that makes their hearts sing and I beleive they feel really good about knowing it is here, alive and well and that they may visit it any time. Chapmans, you are part of us now too, and we are so happy to have your kindest energy > be well and visit us again soon!

July 13th

Today Alex and Glenda Newsom of Pensecola, FL donated $200 to our cause! As the stage, shed, and 'little buildings' are in the process of being built, their timing couldn't be more perfect. Wood and nails can really ad up!! But with their super generous donation, added to the other recent igfts we GOING to make it, and the kids yard space is going to be AWESOME!!! Thank you Newsoms of Florida > for helping make the HSCLC happen!

As mentioned above, the Building Things with Wood Day on Saturday was a super success! If you live here in Hot Springs, you can drive by and see the frame work for several interesting creations. Soon you will see a finished Shed that will hold all of our outdoor toys and games > from the fantastic crew of Larry McCall and Stacey Gueyer. You will also see a smaller wooden structure that looks like a train > this is one of the 'little buildings' that will represent the Hot Spring Welcome Center which in real life is an old red caboose. So we will paint it red and print WELCOME CENTER on it, thanks to Sean over at Elmer's. Three more 'little buildings' will appear soon too > a little Post Office, Bank, and Library! Paul and Caroline worked sweaty on the stage that will host many a perfomance over the years, no doubt. Paul's plans sound wonderful and include ELECTRICITY of course! Brian mixed lots of cement, and lended his supportive hands all day long! What a fabulous crew and what a fine day we had.

July 8th

Today the Snow Hill United Methodist Church of Candler, NC came out the HSCLC with 10 volunteers and donated their time and energy on several of our projects. They helped us reclaim the old sandbox and paint it this great orange color. They dug FIVE holes 2' deep and 2' wide > these are the footers for our new stage! They also prepared the labels and envelops for our Community Calendars. And they washed our screens and scrubbed our sinks and toilets!! What a fantastic group of philanthropists, and what a fine time I had getting to know these wonderful neighbors and new friends. Thank you Snow Hill, we will never forget you! *Please visit their site and feel free to drop them a line of thanks! (link above)

July 7th
The Library opened for business today and I must say Lisa was just radiant. What a remarkable person she is; how blessed we are to have her here in Hot Springs as our librarian and friend. Kudos to you and your volunteer crews! The library looks amazing and I can't wait to check out my first book. The HSCLC is moving right along with painting, cleaning and organizing the business.

July 3rd
The library is nearly completely moved out, and we are so IN!! Today we began to paint. I think you're going to like it>>>>

July 1st
Lot's of action down at the center today >> the books are moving out and the place is looking brighter and brighter. Thank you Morgen, Quinn and Lucas for your volunteer spirits! What a sight to see these two 3 year olds carrying books one by one. Every book counts, right Lisa? Blessings and thanks.

June 30th
Jeanette and David Kendall from Hot Springs, NC just donated $100 to the HSCLC cause! It is perfect timing as we will put it towards the yard and the attorney fees. Much love and gratitude, dear neighbors!

June 23rd
Jim and Elizabeth DeLisle from Vicksburg, Michigan just donated $200 to the HSCLC! How incredibly generous to give all the way over here in little old Hot Springs >> We are so greatful and can't wait to show you what we will do with it! All our love and thanks from the HSCLC!!

June 20th
Dailene and Joseph Malacina in Wisconsin Dells, WI donated $60 credit at the Rainbow Resource Center. This company is amazing and very reasonably priced offering everything from scissors to journal books to children's music to computer programs! Great stuff > we will use this donation well! Blessings, friends of Hot Springs!

June 16th

Our very own Melody Parton generously donated $100 towards our Sentinel Ads that will be coming out next week. What a truly thoughtful way to give to the HSCLC! Be sure to give Mel a wink and a smile when you see her next...... THANK YOU!

June 9th
Last week $1000 was gifted to us by a wonderful Madison County family, and the bug has apparently been passed on. Another wonderful neighbor, who has been keeping up with the project, just donated 50 Gallons of paint! (Good paint too!) According to my calculations that's about $1300. That's $1300 we do not have to spend on paint, and $1300 closer to our goals.

June 6th
We have just received a very generous donation of $1,000!!! A local family, who prefers to remain anonymous, found extra money that came to them that they were not counting on, and decided to do something GREAT with it, and pass it on to the HSCLC >> Many, many, many thanks for your support, trust, and love! This is just amazing, and what perfect timing.
